
Komodo Dragon Watch
Komodo dragons (aka Varanus komodoensis) are the largest prehistoric lizard species that exist on earth today, but they are not the largest reptiles. Crocodiles and alligators are larger than the Komodo dragon. Komodo dragons are also more closely related to the dinosaurs. The Komodo dragon is an alert and agile predator, and a scavenger. It extends up to 3 meters in length and weight over 70 kg. Locally, they are known as “Ora”. To date, about 2.600 still exist in the Komodo National Park. A major part of the population lives on Komodo Island and the nearby island of Rinca. Komodo dragons are the most venomous reptiles on earth. Its saliva is a mixture of toxic bacterion, that can paralyze prey very quickly through blood poisoning. It ambushes or attacks its prey with one powerful bite. Shortly thereafter its victim is paralyzed. Komodo dragons can run as fast as 18 Kph and are able to swim from island to island. Their appearance can actually fool you.
